Michigan has a mussel expert who wants to save the native filter feeders from being smothered by invasive mussels now in the Great Lakes.
Michael Hillary is a fisheries biologist with the state Department of Natural Resources who is seeking ways to protect Michigan’s native mussels, considered keystone aquatic species that support habitat for other species by cycling nutrients across the food web.
The state scientist will discuss during a coming free webinar how Michigan can prevent invasive mussels from harming native populations.
